Police plan OKd to avoid crises with mentally ill

February 11, 2011

As many as 25 percent of San Francisco's police officers will become part of a specially trained crisis intervention team under a plan designed to dial back potentially dangerous situations involving the mentally ill.

After a hearing that went on for more than three hours Wednesday night, the Police Commission voted unanimously to approve the plan, which is based on a nationally acclaimed model that has been running in Memphis since 1988.

It comes nearly a year after the Police Commission narrowly rejected the department's proposal to even explore using the devices commonly known as Tasers, citing safety and liability concerns.

Sit-lie law may already be working in the Haight

January 31, 2011

Proponents of San Francisco’s controversial sit-lie ordinance say the law is already deterring aggressive panhandlers in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, even though police haven’t started enforcing it.

The Civil Sidewalks law went into effect Dec. 17 but won’t be enforced until mid-February, when the department completes its training and community outreach, police said. The law makes it illegal to sit or lie on a public sidewalk in The City between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
