Noted open-water swimmer; handball champ
The venerable South End Rowing Club recently established a tribute to one of its legendary members, deceased SFPD Captain Ray Minkel, Jr. Ray was a legendary open water swimmer, runner, and handball player who was known at the club for his "humor and unconditional comradeship."
The men and women of the San Francisco Police Officers Association extend sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of Firefighters Vincent Perez and Anthony Valerio. Both men succumbed to injuries suffered while battling a fierce blaze in the Diamond Heights neighborhood on June 2, 2011.
Lt. Perez died on the day of the incident. He was 48. Firefighter Valerio died June 4. He was 52. A third firefighter was also injured in the incident, but as of this posting, her name has not been released. We are encouraged by the report that she is recuperating at home.
Officer Bryan Tuvera #1941 was shot while in pursuit of an escaped convict. He succumbed to his wounds a few hours later in the early morning of December 23, 2006. He was 28. Officer Tuvera had served four years with the SFPD, and was assigned to Taraval Station.

The men and women of the San Francisco Police Officers Association mourn the sudden collapse and death of former SFPD Chief Alex Fagan, Sr. He died Monday, November 8, 2010 while visiting London, England. He was 60. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and many, many friends. Chief Fagan served in the SFPD for more than 31 years, retiring in 2004. His career was marked with many special assignments and details, including Narcotics, Administration, Budget, and Emergency Services. He was highly decorated, and was considered by most as a old-style cop’s cop.
