POA Remembers Officer James Guelff

November 12, 2010

San Francisco Police Officer James Guelff was gunned down and killed on November 14, 1994.  He was just 40 years old.

Officer Guelff, riding solo in a marked radio car,  was the first responding officer to a report of a gunman firing shots in the area of Pine and Franklin Streets. Almost immediately upon his arrival, the brave officer bolted from his radio car armed only with his department-issued 6-shot revolver to engage the suspect.  He was killed almost immediately by the heavily armed gunman who was wielding a high-powered semi- automatic rifle and was heavily armored with bulletproof vest, helmet, and kevlar clothing.

The suspect was later killed by other responding officers, but not before he also shot and critically wounded Officer John Payne, who did survive the ordeal following emergency surgery.
