The modern era has been described as the Age of Anxiety, fitting all too nicely with the present circumstances with which public sector workers are forced to contend. How else to describe the current situation – where it is nearly impossible to keep track of every new measure proposed at both the state and local level, either to slash retirement and other benefits or to end collective bargaining outright for public employees? In just the week since I began writing this month’s column, three new initiatives attacking public workers’ pay, benefits, and bargaining rights have been introduced

By an overwhelming vote of 1,126 to 256 (81%), our membership extended its Memorandum of Understanding (contract) through the year 2015. The membership raised its collective voice and once again moved to “do the right thing.” Along with wage increases (which were due after a previous vote to defer raises one year), the security of knowing that our contract will stay in tact in its present form is very reassuring.
I want to thank the membership for their overwhelming yes votes to ratify the contract re-opener. You exhibited common sense and good judgment in approving a plan that secures our raises while at the same time assuring we will suffer no layoffs in the foreseeable future.
