Close Encounters May 2020

Published Date:
May 1, 2020

Obviously there’s a lot happening in The City that would take priority over this column only, when you think about it, there’s really nothing more important than the number of times members of the SFPD put their lives on the line for the benefit of the citizens they serve.

For instance: Sergeant Sergio Lopez runs a plainclothes officer operation out of Ingleside Station consisting of Officer Bryan Zahn, Officer David Lee, Officer Kevin Burke, and Officer Kevin Downs who managed to arrest several individuals armed with guns within a period of only 3 days.

What if, during this potentially life-threatening pandemic, you didn’t have the option of “sheltering in place” because your job depended upon you showing up and handling distress calls from the public such as requests for emergency medical responses, possibly without the protection of appropriate medical attire.

Or what if you’re summoned to a critical incident with multiple shooting victims or a serious traffic accident where immediate medical intervention is required such as pressurizing wounds to stem the bleeding.

Close Encounters March 2020

One of the most interesting things about police work is that sooner or later you realize that you’re all in this thing together.

“This thing” is the daily routine of handling calls for service and, occasionally, those frantic seconds when you’re requesting back-up. And when you call for that emergency assistance you don’t really care who comes to stand side-by-side with you, you just want someone there.

And that is why this job is so unique because a great deal of it requires your trust in your fellow officers to be there when you need them.

Close Encounters January 2020

We normally sign off each one of our columns with a ‘Stay safe’ hoping that you can avoid all of the dangers associated with the job you do. After all, what other profession requires that you wear a gun to work. And what other occupation leaves you with only seconds before you have to decide which type of force is necessary to render a situation safe. And that decision you make will then follow you through all of the pending interviews and reports you’ll have to deal with justifying your actions.
