Gascón has had triumphs and stumbles in 1st year at helm
A cluster of San Francisco business figures wait to talk to Police Chief George Gascón after a recent luncheon, and the man who has headed the city's police force for the last year seems eager to hear them all.
He's at ease in a dark suit. Rather than police jargon, he sprinkles in business terms like "product" and "customer service." There are handshakes all around.
At a meeting with immigrant community members in the Mission District last year on police impounding cars from unlicensed drivers, Gascón addressed concerns in Spanish. After missing a planned appearance in Chinatown and hearing that some people felt slighted, Gascón rescheduled.
