San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris Announces Man Charged in Russian Hill Slaying

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – District Attorney Kamala D. Harris announced today the charging of Scott Holland aka Gary Scott Holland, for murder, burglary, robbery and attempted rape. The victim in this case, Kathleen Horan, was a 46-year-old resident of San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood.

“This was a brutal and horrific crime,” said District Attorney Kamala D. Harris. “The defendant used a deadly ruse to violate the sanctity of the victim’s home and murder her. We are outraged, because this murder, like every other taking of a life, rips at the heart of our community and weakens the fabric of our civil society.”

On October 29, 2010, Defendant Holland (DOB 6/29/67) is alleged to have entered the victim’s apartment located on the 900 block of Chestnut Street. He posed as a utility worker to gain access to the victim’s home. San Francisco Police officers responded to Horan’s residence to check on her well-being. Upon entry, officers discovered her body inside her apartment.

At the time of the murder, Holland was on parole for an attempted murder conviction that occurred in Fresno in 1999. For that crime, he was sentenced to 13 years in state prison.

Defendant Holland was arrested on November 5, 2010 and is currently being held in San Francisco County Jail. The defendant is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in San Francisco Superior Court for arraignment on one count of murder in violation of Penal Code Section 187, two counts of residential burglary in violation of Penal Code Section 459, one count of attempted rape in violation of Penal Code Section 664/261 and one count of robbery in violation of Penal Code Section 211.

“Thanks to the quick work of San Francisco police officers and prosecutors we can all rest a little easier knowing that this defendant is in custody and awaiting trial,” said San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris. “But we must continue our vigilance in the fight against crime by staying alert, not letting our guard down and reporting crime to authorities when it occurs.”

The arrest of defendant Holland is the result of the investigation of San Francisco Police Department Inspector Michael Dudoroff, Inspector Daniel Dedet and Inspector Robert Velarde. Jean Hassett is the Victim Witness Advocate from the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office assigned to this case. Assistant District Attorney Michael Swart is the prosecutor.
