The annual Jeff Scholarship Awards were presented in late August to dependents of active, retired, and deceased members. The recipients of these awards were judged by the POA Scholarship Committee on their academics, extracurricular activities, community service, and a five hundred word essay. The topic chosen for this year was "Tell us about a mentoring program that you would like to develop and why."
The first place for the year 2010 goes to Megan O'Meara, daughter of active Officer James O'Meara of the Permit Bureau. Megan is attending the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and has received $3,000.00 towards her college education. Megan's winning essay is reprinted in this edition of the Journal.
This year the POA has awarded $24,500.00 in scholarships to college bound students. The funds for these awards are raised through the proceeds from the POA Golf Tournament. Every student who completed all phases of the application was awarded a scholarship. My thanks go out to the POA Scholarship Committee and especially to Gavin McEachern, Roland Tolosa, Robin Matthews, Kevin Lyons, Lynn Tomioka, Greg Suhr, Frank Hagan, Yvonne Pratt, Robert Vernengo, and Ed Hagan who spent many hours reading and grading the essays. Many thanks also to Courtney Dickson at the POA who spent many hours organizing and verifying information for the Committee.
On behalf of President Gary Delagnes and the entire Board of Directors I would like to congratulate all the recipients of this year Jeff Barker Scholarship Awards and wish all these students much success in their college years.
