Officer Lewin-Tankel Way

  • July 1, 2026

By Louis Wong
SFPOA President

On June 4, 2026, the San Francisco Police Department marked a historic occasion with the unveiling of Officer Lewin-Tankel Way in front of the Tenderloin Task Force (301 Eddy Street).

As we all know, Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel was seriously injured in the line of duty, sustaining injuries that forever changed the course of his life. Yet while injuries may leave scars, they can never diminish a person’s character, integrity, or the lasting impact of their service.

What defines Elia is not the moment of tragedy, but the years of dedication, professionalism, courage, and compassion he demonstrated before it—and the remarkable strength, resilience, and determination he has shown ever since. Throughout his career, Elia served the people of San Francisco with honor and distinction, earning the respect of his colleagues and the community alike.

This renaming is more than symbolic. It tells every resident, every visitor, and every young person who passes this sign that service matters. It reminds us that courage matters. It affirms that the sacrifices made by those who wear the badge in service to others will not be forgotten.

A street sign may seem simple, but names carry stories. Beginning on June 4, 2026, this street will tell a story of resilience, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the community. It will stand as a lasting reminder that behind every badge is a human being who accepted extraordinary responsibility on behalf of others.

Officer Lewin-Tankel Way will commemorate not only a sacrifice made in the line of duty, but also the strength of character that has defined Elia throughout his life and career. It will remind us that true courage is measured not only by actions taken in moments of danger, but also by the perseverance and determination shown in the face of adversity.

For generations to come, those who pass this sign will be reminded of a public servant who answered the call to serve, who placed the safety of others above his own, and who continues to inspire through his resilience and example. His story is now forever woven into the fabric of this city, serving as a testament to the enduring values of honor, sacrifice, and service.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Lewin-Tankel family for traveling to San Francisco to be with us for this special occasion. Your presence makes this ceremony even more meaningful, and we are honored to celebrate Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel’s legacy alongside you.

I would also like to thank Mayor Daniel Lurie for his leadership and support in signing the legislation that made the designation of Officer Lewin-Tankel Way possible. My sincere appreciation goes to the members of the Board of Supervisors, the SFPD Command Staff, Steven Betz, and the many individuals who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this vision to reality.

While many people contributed to making this day possible, special recognition must be given to the driving force behind this effort, Sergeant Michael Cunnie. What began as an idea and a conversation with Supervisor Bilal Mahmood ultimately became a lasting tribute to a deserving officer. Sergeant Cunnie’s dedication, persistence, and commitment to honoring Elia’s service transformed that vision into reality.

Today is a testament to what can be accomplished when people come together with a shared purpose. Because of their efforts, Officer Lewin-Tankel’s story and legacy will be permanently woven into the fabric of our city. For generations to come, those who pass this street will be reminded of a courageous officer, a devoted public servant, and the collective commitment of a community determined to ensure that his sacrifice and service are never forgotten.

Officer Lewin-Tankel Way is more than a name on a sign—it is a tribute to a legacy that will continue to inspire, educate, and remind us all of the profound impact one individual can have on a community.

Today, we honor Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel’s legacy—a legacy defined by courage, service, resilience, and sacrifice. May all who pass this way remember the extraordinary dedication of a police officer whose impact on this department, this city, and the people he served will never be forgotten.
