From the Heart

  • November 1, 2025

Dear Friends,

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who came together to recognize me as the first Asian President of the San Francisco Police Officers Association. When Mary Jung from the San Francisco Realtors Association first brought up the idea, I honestly balked. I didn’t want that kind of attention. My focus has always been on doing the work — helping our members with labor issues, working through changes in our conditions, and making sure our voices are heard. I never thought a celebration was necessary for doing the job I wanted.

But after a few days of thinking about it, I realized this wasn’t really about me at all. It was about something bigger — about recognizing the incredible women and men of the SFPD and the vital role we play in keeping this city safe and helping it thrive. That realization changed everything for me.

The event at Harbor View Restaurant turned out to be something truly special. It brought together people from all walks of life — community leaders, organizations, and elected officials — all united around one common goal: public safety. You could feel it in the room. It was powerful to see how one idea, one moment, could bring together such a wide network of support for the work we do every single day.

I was deeply humbled to have guest speakers like former Mayor Willie Brown, Senator Scott Wiener, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, and Y Combinator CEO Gary Tan. Their words and their presence reminded me just how much respect and appreciation there is for the SFPD — more than I ever could’ve imagined.

I would also like to thank the people who helped make this event possible. My sincere appreciation goes to Mary Jung, Lily Ho, Jay Cheng, and so many others who worked tirelessly to organize such a memorable evening. I also want to thank those who attended — Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, Supervisors Matt Dorsey, Bilal Mahmood, Stephen Sherrill, Danny Sauter, and Chyanne Chen, Police Commissioners Larry Yee, Mattie Scott, and Wilson Leung, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, Chief Paul Yep, Deputy Chiefs Derrick Lew, Mark Im, Nicole Jones, and Jason Sawyer, Commanders Tracy McCray, Brien Hoo, and Tom Maguire, Captain Sergio Chin, Sheriff Paul Miyamoto, Fire Department representative Dean Crispin, retired Chief Fred Lau, retired Chief Heather Fong, and retired Assistant Chief David Lazar.

Finally, a heartfelt thank-you to my dedicated staff at the SFPOA, our entire Executive Board, POA attorney Rocky Lucia, and the nearly 280 people who attended. I’m sorry if I didn’t mention everyone by name, but please know that I truly appreciate your presence and support.

No one knows the sacrifices our officers make better than those of us who have lived it — the long midnight hours, the missed holidays, the emotional toll of what we see and carry. I’ve been there, and I see all of you continuing to show up, day after day, with dedication and heart.

That night wasn’t about me — it was about all of us. About recognizing your hard work, your courage, and your commitment to this city. Thank you for what you do and for allowing me the honor of standing beside you as your President.

With gratitude,

Louis
