Ragnar Relay Update Benefiting PAL

August 1, 2011
SFPOA

PAL is the Ragnar Relay’s designated charity – you can help PAL raise much needed funds!  So far 300 teams of 12 have signed up to race 190 miles from Marina Green to Calistoga, including a SFPD (team organizers Lt. Jason Fox and PAL President Rick Bruce) and a SFFD team.

We need help with this event!  You can help in two ways:

  1.  If you are a runner with at least an 11-minute average, consider joining the SFPD team.  Contact Jason Fox or Rick Bruce for more details (415-401-4667.)
  2. Volunteer for a shift at one of 36 exchange points along the course.  Possible duties include course directions, exchange point management, time keeping, and course supervision.  PAL Cadets and their families will be volunteers – but we’ll need more.

Ragnar will donate $100 to PAL for every volunteer we recruit, and you’ll have fun to boot.  Please visit the PAL website www.sfpal.org or contact Anne Crawford at 415-401-4667 for more details.

PAL Summer Cadet Academy Graduates Youth into SFPD Internship Program

Congratulations to the 47 young men and women who graduated from the 2011 PAL Summer Cadet Academy on July 8th at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. Chief Greg Suhr, with the SFPD Command Staff by his side, addressed graduates, their family and friends, regarding the PAL Cadet’s new leadership roles and responsibilities. Awards were presented to three outstanding PAL Cadets by the Deputy Chief Cashman, Dudley and Schmitt for academics and physical training.

Graduates completed a 4-week, 6 hours per day, intensive training that parallels the recruit training to become an SFPD officer.

Thanks to the outstanding work and guidance of the San Francisco Police Academy staff under the leadership of Captain Terri Barrett, this group of young men and women are prepared to begin the second phase of the program: internships in SFPD stations and bureaus.  Keep an eye out for PAL Cadet interns coming to a station near you!

The PAL Law Enforcement Cadet program is designed to provide leadership and hands-on job skills for kids interested in exploring law enforcement careers.  PAL Cadets are 14-20 year old youth that live in or attend school in San Francisco, maintain at least a 2.0 GPA (although this year’s class has an average GPA of 3.0), and have a clear background record. PAL Cadets will meet bi-weekly for ongoing training and community service throughout the year.

Thank you to Chief Greg Suhr, his leadership team and to all who have helped grow and support this rejuvenated program over the past two years.  With current participants from 2010, more than 60 youth will be serving in the program in 2011-12, the largest in San Francisco PAL’s 52-year history.
